Our expert panel of 15 judges spent three days sipping, swirling, and heatedly debating the merits of over 800 entries, until they finally arrived at the top 100 best-value wines

 The Process

Wines were tasted blind on a like-with-like basis. Our judges were divided into three mini-panels. Flights of wine were organized by style and price. Winners were chosen by consensus among the judges, who collectively decided which wines represented the best values. The mini-panels then united for the final playoff among all the category winners, at which the Beronia Rioja Reserva 2004 was voted Best in Show.

Many bottles are widely available from B.C. LDB stores. This symbol ★ indicates a restricted listing (bottles that are available only from private wine stores and winery shops). For a list of private wine stores carrying these wines, click here.

What a life to be the expert! I enjoy a glass of wine, especially when on holidays. Hunter Valley in Australia and California are my most memorable trips to wineries. I never went to Spain, but since your best of the best is a Spanish wine
Beronia Rioja Reserva 2004, I might plan a trip there. Hoping to visit Vancouver one day too, I travel around snowboarding, so Whistler is the place to be at least once in a lifetime! If you travel as much as I do, you might find this site helpful, with just hotels that are priced well for those who leave it to the last minute.

There is a competition also in NY. The New York International Wine Awards (NYIWA) is a competition that consists only of judges who interact, on a daily basis, with the most valuable and ultimate decision-maker, the Consumer.

There is only two sommeliers as judges in the group. How come? I thought that at least 50% should be sommeliers / wine experts to make a real judgement, no?

Cheers,

Great discoveries. I am looking forward to try a lot of those wines. I usually stick to the safe bet, Jackson Triggs, but with those recommendations, you can be sure I will treat myself! Minty - mouth guard for grinding teeth
