Deep Cove

For much of the city’s population, Deep Cove village—that easterly nubbin of North Vancouver—has been a nonentity. In August, one might trek there for a deck party or water adventure. (Gelato shops and kayak suppliers prove that recreation still bolsters the local economy.) But who knew that three of Vancouver’s finest shops perch there too? LaLa Home Décor and Room 6 both sell precious decorative objets so chic the owners shrug at the notion of tourist season. “We’re not,” says Kristina Egyed, of LaLa’s, “in the business of miniature totem poles.” Post-browse, head for unsharable donuts at Honey, whose walls are lined with 1940s photos of the area (a forested retreat, then and now). Locals nosh on BLTs but can bend toward Lululemon jackets and heated discussions of Eckhart Tolle. Meanwhile, mass development encroaches: the Tsleil-Waututh Nation is turning part of its land into the 50-estate elite residential development Raven Woods. But the heart of Deep Cove, like the circle of moss-painted homes within walking distance, nicely balances rural and urbane flavours.
