SURAIA ALAMI

Suraia Alami (worked at a bank in Kabul. A rocket attack destroyed her house. Her
husband was jailed and later died of a heart attack. She spent three years trying to get to Canada with her two teenaged sons. She’s been here 10 years now, but still struggles with the language. Every morning she takes the bus to her English class, then to the co-op. “I used to sit at home,” she says in Dhari. “It was very bad. Now I come here, talk, and feel better.”
