How Soon Is Now

Feb 7 - May 3, 2009
Vancouver Art Gallery
.

After 120 studio visits, the Vancouver Art Gallery’s curators have assembled a roster of over 30 B.C. artists they’ve tagged as up-and-comers in sculpture, painting, video, performance, and the curiously named “architectural intervention.” Much of the work has a refreshingly post-ironic feel, as though the artists were seeking (to everyone's surprise) a kind of earnestness. Don't miss the nostalgic humour in Aaron Carpenter's Insomnia Study, which recreates an end-of-the-day television test pattern in bars of coloured felt. Several of the works are easy to engage with in a literal sense: Samuel Roy-Bois has created a miniature sound stage where gallery-goers can play guitar and sing; the "music" is then broadcast in the VAG's lobby. Also included are several more known names: Mark Soo, Damian Moppett, and Lucy Pullen, for starters.
