Manchester-born Housley has built a reputation over the past dozen years for a humour and fresh energy brought to the practice of painting. His portraits, in equal measure heroic and absurd, draw the viewer into consideration not just of technique (though the sheer volume of brushstrokes and pigment calls attention to the labour of painting) but of hubris and history as well.
