This year’s Best in Show is a perfect expression of 2007’s most important trend: a dramatic pendulum swing back to Old World wines, especially indigenous Mediterranean grapes and styles.

Pasqua’s Sagramoso Ripasso is about as self-consciously Old World as you can get, produced by a refermentation on the skins of shrivelled Amarone grapes. The deep woody, earthy, wild cherry aromas would have been familiar to the ancient Romans, who employed the practice of raisinating grapes 2,000 years ago.
