THE CHEESE PLACE
Notable for its knowledgeable staff, The Cheese Place has been doing cheese and crackers and absolutely nothing else for 30 years. It’s the place to go to for gift baskets at all price points. 267-2083 Alma St., 604-222-1911.

FORSTERS FINE CHEESES
Ken Cheeseman (yes, really his name) is the new owner of Forsters, carrying on Stephen Forster’s tradition of educating the world (or at least his customers) about the finer points of gourmet cheese. 2104 W. 41st Ave., 604-261-5813.

LES AMIS DU FROMAGE
Alice and Allison Spurrell’s second location in Park Royal is almost as well-stocked as the main store on West 2nd, which has upwards of 350 cheeses. Nice selection of olive oils, honey from Europe and the southern U.S., and quality condiments—everything good to go with cheese. A wide variety of local artisan cheeses are also featured. 1752 W. 2nd Ave., 604-732-4218; 518 Park Royal South, 604-925-4218.

VANCOUVER ISLAND

HILARY'S CHEESE AND DELI
Cheesemaker Hilary Abbot has settled in nicely with his own cafe, offering over 100 artisanal cheeses, including his own farmgate specialties. Belle Ann, a goat’s milk chevre washed in Cherry Point Vineyards blackberry port is queen, with cheese curds equally regal. Order from the daily cheeseboard, served with a crusty baguette from neighbour True Grain. 1737 Cowichan Bay Rd., 250-748-5992.

NATURAL PASTURES
Milk is sourced solely from Island farms practicing sustainable farming and environmental stewardship. Over 13 varieties, with many small-batch treats like the much-anticipated Fairburn Farm water buffalo mozzarella. We love boerenkaas, a luscious semi-hard Dutch treat, and the Island-grown wasabi verdelait, a zippy blend of cheddar. Can ship Canada-wide. 635 McPhee Rd., Courtenay, 250-334-4422, 866-244-4422.
