WEST SIDE

LONGHOUSE SEAFOOD MARKET
First Nations-owned and -operated, Longhouse has its own boat and the best salmon prices in town (on par with prices at the Steveston dock). As well as fresh fish, you’ll find traditional smoked salmon, salmon candy, and jerky alongside salmon phyllo with spinach and feta or shrimp and crab. First Nations products are promoted throughout the longhouse-themed store: Chief’s pride smoked oysters, Ojibwe wild rice, and canned sockeye from the Nisga’a. A six-minute wait will get you steamed crab or lobster from the live tank. 4288 Dunbar St., 604-731-2047.

MACFARLANE'S SELECTED FISH MARKET
What started as door-to-door fish sales in 1921 has morphed into four generations of fishmongers. Grandson John helms the Kerrisdale operation, while a great-granddaughter operates a Walnut Grove storefront. Look for sashimi-grade Ahi tuna, firm sable fish and whatever else catches John’s eye on his daily morning buying trips. 2233 W. 41st Ave., 604-261-1226.

SEVEN SEAS
With a direct source to its own boats, the shop’s fish arrive fresh and early. Pick up their signature salmon candy: smoked salmon done up with maple syrup. Lots of OceanWise-approved selections. 2328 W. 4th Ave., 604-732-8608; 2011 Lonsdale Ave., North Van, 604-983-3474.
