Indian Food Market

Find curry leaves and other fresh herbs and vegetables at this friendly grocery store. Swift turnover of aged basmati rice, locally milled flours and spices guarantees freshness, while chutneys and pickles are sure to delight. On-site butcher offers fresh goat and lamb and house tandoori-spiced chicken—spicy or mild—to cook at home. Samosas and sugary treats brought in from Vancouver twice weekly, with pots and pans, henna, Indian movie rentals, cleaning products—even Indian soda pop—rounding out the selection.

British Candy Shoppe/ English Sweet Shoppe

Part curiosity shops, both locations jam in the best British candies, biscuits, and groceries. Licorice goes multi with over 40 styles from triple salted to chewy pontefract cakes. And don’t forget the Twiglets and Cadbury Flakes. Mealtime groceries offer up cans of mushy peas, chip shop curry sauce and Gentleman’s relish, with spotted dick and cootie dumplings for dessert. Specialty items at Christmas and zippy mail order.

Red Barn Country Market

A long-established country-style market that has spurned three locations throughout the city. Their double smoked bacon is legendary—a favourite of many chefs—and the smoked pork loin works magic in a choucroute. The aged smoked cheddar is also a winner. Picnic area offers respite to kick back with an ice cream or one of their sky-high custom sandwiches. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Plenty Epicurean Pantry

Accept the cup of tea offered while you explore the array of local, regional, and organic products, expertly sourced by owner Trevor Walker. Find items like single-estate chocolates and teas, soaps from a Kandahar co-op, and bubble gum from a rainforest. Unusual tableware from salvaged wood, crafted into salad tongs or pepper mills. There are also breads from True Grain, preserves from Mountain Ash in Powell River, Salt Spring Island cheeses and pastries, and Victoria's own Bonnie Bea's organic oatcakes.
