Baked Goods

Siegel’s Bagels

Siegel’s offers 22 unique varieties of their wood-fire baked bagels, and four kinds of rugolach, but their calling card remains the wildly popular Montreal smoked-meat sandwich, sliced thin, steamed, and stacked high. The Cornwall location is open 24/7, so stumble by for a late-night munch or a sunrise breakfast.

Sabra Kosher Bakery and Deli

Owner Simon Kahlon doubled his shop three years ago, and now he’s opened a whole new location: Pini’s Pizza and Grocery on West 16th. Along with delicious falafel, schnitzel, and schwarma, Sabra also serves kosher Chinese food—one-of-a-kind on the West Coast. Patrons are mad about the sesame chicken and the ginger beef. Who knew?

Pâtisserie Lebeau

Pâtisserie Lebeau has recently expanded their waffle offerings to include both sweet and savoury options. For breakfast, try a Brussels waffle with Cheddar and green onion. Come back at lunch for a waffle sandwich, and save room for one of their classics, flavoured with dried fruit or dipped in chocolate, or a filled waffle loaded with peach, custard, apples, or ice cream. Can’t make it down to the store? They’re also available at Whole Foods, Capers, and Choices.

Pâtisserie Bordeaux

Heavenly croissants in plain, chocolate, or almond are almost as popular as the baguettes that sell out daily. Try savoury tortière, sausage rolls, or chausson—pastry filled with ham and mushrooms in a white-cheese sauce.

Pane from Heaven

Owners Vonn and Ranu Lath recommend the tandoori chicken panini, with caramelized onion and mango chutney, on house-made roasted red pepper and rosemary bread. Finish off with an artfully crafted cappuccino and chocolate pear crostata, butter croissant, or perhaps Vonn’s favourite: the healthy fruit and nut scone.
