East Is East “Organic Living” is a three-room complex with the decor of a hurricane-ravaged killim shop. Order à la carte around low tables from a menu long on Middle Eastern protein-forward curries and roti rolls—Ghandara Blues with baked eggplant, tomatoes, and fresh herbs, and Lion of the Desert (peas and paneer) are both tasty vegetarian options. At lunch, take a chance on one of the rib-sticking shakes, like the dense Turkish Chill (espresso, chocolate, hazelnut, and cinnamon). Portions are adequate but not huge; service at both the Kits and East Side locations is dreamy bordering on transcendental. For large, private parties the Chai Gallery upstairs offers buffet dining long on chickpeas, paneer, and lamb accompanied by richly sauced vegetables; Silk N’ Spice next door hosts live music many evenings.
