A refreshing Main Street restaurant-cum-hangout from a group of restaurant veterans and designers. David Nicolay and Rob Edmonds of Evoke are among the owners, so the room’s good looks came as no surprise when it opened in 2005. Plate glass windows look out onto the busy Main Street traffic, but inside it’s anything but frenetic. The well tended bar and cosy booths are dressed in autumnal colours, and the light fixtures resemble balls of fire. Chef Greg Armstrong’s menu delivers thoughtful, Canadian-inspired share plates at middling prices. Try the dizzyingly aromatic mussels steamed with bacon, leeks, white wine and garlic paired with a cold glass of lager. Also highly recommended: crispy tofu, mushrooms and spinach with a chili-hoisin sauce ($9), and Moroccan spiced free-run chicken wings glazed with orange-chili and pomegranate ($10).
