Recognized as Vancouver magazine’s  best restaurant to open in 2008, La Quercia (“oak tree” in Italian) comes to us from veteran kitchen hands Adam Pegg and Lucais Syme, first-time restaurateurs with experience at Parkside, Cioppino’s, and La Buca. It’s a tiny room (30 seats and guests must sheepishly walk through the kitchen to access the washroom, but it’s well appointed and expertly served. The food is the main draw, with near-perfect Northern Italian dishes at accessible price points. Any of their pastas will do just fine (especially the creamy made-to-order risotto for two, $50) but they’re magicians with starters—the flank steak ($26) with arugula, pine nuts, and parmesan will have carnivores swaying. Wine list is as short and neat as the room.
