Ping’s Café
October 8, 2009
Frosted glass windows and a nondescript façade belie an ethereal gallery-like space within. Step beyond a heather-grey curtain to discover dozens of Omer Arbel designed porcelain light fixtures gracefully suspended in clusters above soft pleated-felt banquettes lining sleek zinc tables. Josh Olson and Hiroko Yamamoto serve up their izakaya-influenced brand of yoshoku fare, a playful yet comforting Japanese take on Western classic standbys. Tuna tataki and the Ping Dog are contrasting lead-ins, the latter a plump bratwurst sausage served with pickled beets and tangy ponzu-seasoned daikon. Simple main dishes include panko-crusted pork tenderloin (hire tonkatsu) and miso-teriyaki black cod. Artisan Granville Island sake complements the succinct beer and wine list, soon to include selections from organic biodynamic B.C. vintner Farmstead Wines.
