Our judges again awarded Gold to La Régalade for its traditional bistro atmosphere that lays down the French card and is “almost too crusty for white bread West Van.” Saluted: hearty and honest terrines and braises warmed with breezy service. “You get your own cocotte of Alain’s coq au vin in heaven,” said one judge. Silver goes to Gusto di Quattro for its reliable, charming room and unfailingly good service and some serious points for the eclectic, prime-value wine list. On the coattails of La Régalade, sibling Côté Mer (Bronze) sees the Rayé family focussed on seafood, in preps robust (lobster shepherd’s pie) and delicate (crab and avocado, barely dressed). Halibut, black cod and bourride all rate, moules even more so. The Observatory (Honourable Mention), where chef Sylvain Cuerrier and his kitchen brigade source seasonal, regional ingredients for changing menus, “is one of the best destination restaurants to show off your town. Curiously, it’s often overlooked by locals.” The Ocean Club (Honourable Mention) is a lively, young-spirited addition to the broker belt (open ’til 3 a.m!) with excellent signature cocktails, a well-priced and accessible menu and the best design on the shore. Look for recently opened sibling room, The Mountain Club, in Whistler.
