Kids' Wear Best Buys 2012

Style-savvy moms and dads likely already know Redfish Kids. Founded in 2005, the trend-setting children's clothes were previously only available online and in select boutiques, but now the brand has its own beautiful shop. The new space echoes Redfish’s structured but playful design aesthetic: clean lines, bright prints, colourful trinkets. While mom-founders Lorraine Kitsos and Kristy Brinkley can't guarantee you'll be able to wrangle your kids into happily trying things on, they're positive the whole family will enjoy browsing their selection of toys and books including brands like Petit Bateau, Steiff Germany, Raplapla from Montreal, and Playsam Toys from the U.K.

Viva Portobello

As though the Robson Street "runway" wasn't enough of a shopping mecca, this weekend the Granville/Robson corner is getting an influx of over 30 local designers. "You'd have to shut down the street to accommodate that many vendors!" is what you might be thinking-and you'd be right. For two days only (August 18 and 19), indie design community Portobello West is teaming up with the city's Viva Vancouver street-blocking squad in order to create Viva Portobello, a local-global shopping celebration. So if you've never caressed one of the treasures by Clutches of Karma, laid your eyes on the darkly adorable lockets and prints by A Cagey Bee, or feasted on Alyson's Designer Cookies, we highly recommend strolling by. - Jennifer Giesbrecht

Flattering Swimwear at Lark on Main

Come on in, the water's fine!

 Drifitng Arrows

We only wish we'd discovered this line sooner. Lark on Main Street carries Drifting Arrows swimwear, a line concieved by Maui-raised surfer and fashion buyer Leah Lawrence (how's that for merging practicality and style?). The cuts have that retro-inspired (and figure flattering) look that's dominated fashionable swimwear for the last few years: high-waisted bottoms, rouched tops, solid colours, and minimal hardware. Full pieces have adjustable straps that tie at your tailbone to accomodate both long and short torsos (hooray!), and supportive cups and boning keep everything in place. Summer isn't over yet...

Tech Meets Style at Caya

 Strike a pose!

         Caya

Seen the glowing purple signs and pulsating, vaguely futuristic interiors of Caya shops? Here's the deal: they're owned by Telus, so you can buy a smartphone and all the accoutrements, along with all sorts of cameras, from basic point'n'shoots to heavy hardware for budding pros. Caya also offers imaging and printing from Black's photography, so you can turn your favourite prints into albums, books and other works of art. But what sets Caya apart from the rest of the techie crowd is their stylish collection of quality accessories for modern businesspeople, like Jack Spade bags, elegant messenger totes and chic, original phone sleeves.

Pictured: Boat Bag by Gräf & Lantz in Charcoal (reg. $349.99 - currently on sale for $174.99), Dipped Industrial Canvas York Brief by Jack Spade (reg. $245.99 - currently on sale for $119.99) and Nikon 1J1 Compact System camera ($549.99)
