FETCH
Since everybody and their dog is selling something superfluous
(er, essential) for your pampered pooch, you’ve
got to work hard to make an impression on Rover. Start
at Fetch, where you can find Beanies and Belvedere’s
traditionally styled trench coat—for Rover, of
course—as well as the Petote dog carrier, which,
while ventilated and padded for your puppy, looks an
awful lot like your designer purse. At the in-house
Spaw, yucky pups become lovely lap dogs. 120 W.
16th St., 604-986-8302
HANA RAY
Named after the owner’s daughter, Hana Ray sells
surfer-chic clothing, shoes, bags, swimsuits and accessories,
as well as deliciously fragrant Jaqua bath and body
products; we love the Chocolate Mint flavour. 3068
Highland Blvd, 604-985-8511
LIBERTY
For the decor inept, shopping at home-accoutrements
boutique Liberty is a way to infuse your house with
style, without having to think. Coveted items include
Sarah Richardson’s line of furniture, a sleek
silver art deco lamp and mercury glass tea light holders.
Where else can you find a stone dove or mermaid candlestick?
We dunno, but we want ’em. A new Victoria location
opens soon. 1037 Marine Dr., 604-988-6695
MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT
CO.
A one-stop-shop for everything you’ll need for
time spent in the great outdoors. For the first-time
nature explorer to the advanced mountain climber, there’s
something, if not everything, for everyone. 1341
Main St., 604-990-4417. Second location: 130 W. Broadway,
Mount Pleasant, 604-872-7858.
SECOND WAVE
First generation surfers and sk8ers (who actually have
the money to spend on a new O’Neill wetsuit, 32
snowboard boots or RVCA hoodie) feed their insatiable
stoke at Second Wave. Pop in and catch a few minutes
of Tofino-based Jeremy Koreski’s surf video Shrink.
139 Lonsdale Ave., 604-986-9283
PURE NAIL BAR
Terrified of neon nail bars and traumatized by spa pedicure
prices, North Vancouverites rejoiced when Pure Nail
Bar opened shop in the burgeoning LoLo neighbourhood
(that’s Lower Lonsdale, cityfolk). A snip of the
nails and cuticles and a skilled slop of OPI polish
will only put you back $35, with no threat of a mysterious
post-pedi foot fungus. 116 W. Third St., 604-988-1150
ROOM 6
Pluck a gal from the American snowboarding industry,
plant her in Deep Cove, and the result is Room 6. Owner
Megan Curren’s eye for superior design backs up
the store’s mantra: “special things for
nice people.” Such as? Marimekko goodies (tablecloths,
$85), artsy-but-cuddly Blabla stuffed toys (from $39),
whimsical necklaces by locals Andrea Waines and Filou,
and the best-selling Man, You Smell Good gentlemen’s
bath line, which Curren whips up in-house. Never get
across the bridge? It’s all available online.

WHERE TO
LUNCH: NORTHLANDS
Northlands Restaurant &
Lounge has the best patio in North Van, a new
chef, and new management (the same folks who run
Raincity Grill). The best part? Nobody knows (until
now). Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and
well worth the drive.

SCL KIDS
This kiddie clothing boutique is a one-stop-shop for
infant to junior ages. Catering to occasions like weddings
and christenings, we love the mini tux’s $120-$135.
Wee Step shoes and boots are always a hit ($25.50 -
$34.50) as are educational toys like the Twilight Turtle
that shines constellations on to the ceiling ($60).
