Salty Tongue Deli and Café

As anyone in the queue will tell you, the sandwiches here are worth the wait. Plus,  you can grab a pint until it’s your turn to design your own. Sandwich fillings are all made on-site or by the geniuses responsible for Salt Tasting Room’s charcuterie menu. Try the homemade meatloaf, roasted brine turkey, and cheeses from Neal’s Yard.

The Pink Pantry

Truly a unique store. The Pink Pantry is the epicurian brainchild of Donald Johannesson, former creative director for FDJ French Dressing. His 30 years of work in fashion took him across North America, Asia, and Europe, and his shop’s stock shows it. Local and international specialty foods line the shelves: truffle oil, dried mushrooms, and champagne vinegar are just a few. Shoppers can even join a Pink Pantry Picks of the Month club and have a bundle of epicurian delights delivered to their doors. Bonus points: The Pink Pantry is actively involved in raising money to fight breast cancer.

European Deli

Lined up on the shelves, alongside Italian sauces and French cheeses, are jars of lime and mango pickle, sangak (a Persian flatbread), and other distinctly Iranian fare. Go in for assh, a delicious soup made from spinach, chickpeas, and a veritable veggie patch of other ingredients, and pick up some authentic saffron while you slurp. Even better are the dips prepared by Hosseinzadeh’s wife, Marzey, which include (depending on the week) eggplant mirza, shallot dip, and homemade hummus (so good you’ll eat it with a spoon).

Bosa Foods

There’s the locally loved Victoria Drive store, and then there’s the massive warehouse smack in the middle of an industrial park. It’s worth the drive. Local products are well-represented (Terra Breads, Zara’s Pasta, Mario’s Gelati), as are well-priced bulk items (everything from one-kilo bags of Piselli biscotti to walnuts to Sperlari candies). The deli counter is a buffet of imported meats, cheese, olives and antipasti. The best deals are found at the lunch counter: hot entrées and grilled panini for $4.95, espresso for 99 cents!
