Emily Carr and the Theatre of Transcendence

Mar 10, 2012
This collection of paintings and drawings of the forest from the 1930s and ’40s highlights the connection the artist saw between the natural world and a higher consciousness. It includes work by peers, current artists, and graduates from her namesake school—Karin Bubaš, Lawren Harris, and Steven Shearer, among them—who have applied transcendence to modern-day culture.

Shore, Forest and Beyond

Nov 14, 2011

This landmark survey is drawn from the private collection of Michael Audain and his wife, Yoshiko Karasawa. (Audain is CEO of Polygon Homes and a substantial benefactor.) A major showing of work by B.C. artists, the exhibition of 170 pieces traces the standout strands of artistic production in the province to the present day, as well as depth in the Mexican modernism of artists like Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siquieros.
