TRAVEL: DECEMBER 2006

PART 2: THE BEST REST

Whistler's most exclusive hotels are pricey, unfailingly hospitable and within walking distance of one another. Here's how to tell them apart.—R. Poole

ADARA HOTEL

4122 Village Green; 604-905-4665; Adarahotel.com;
doubles from $229 a night.

Pro: Contemporary décor a welcome departure from the rustic lodge motif found elsewhere in the village.

Con: Open-concept rainshower floods the bath area if you’re not careful, and soundproofing is a problem (if you’re booked on the wrong side of the hotel you’ll hear Buffalo Bills patrons well into the night).

Perk: Bath products from Fresh (love the ample-sized soy shampoo), and an iPod dock on the nightstand.

Famous Guests: Bif Naked.

Bed Check: 250-thread-count sheets and 300-thread-count duvets topped with synthetic fur throws for extra warmth.

Soaker Tub? No.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT WHISTLER

4591 Blackcomb Way, 604-935-3400; Fourseasons.com;
doubles from $345 a night.

Pro: The most luxurious rooms in town—bar none—complemented by a stellar collection of west coast art (look for the massive Gordon Smith painting above the stairwell in the lobby).

Con: No ski-in/ski-out access and only one restaurant (it’s an excellent one, but still).

Perk: Slopeside ski concierge service, complete with hot chocolate.

Famous Guests: Hotel staff are sworn to secrecy.

Bed Check: 200-thread-count, Egyptian cotton bed linens from Rivolta Carmignani, topped with white goose-down duvets.

Soaker Tub? Yes.

FAIRMONT CHATEAU WHISTLER

4599 Chateau Blvd., 604-938-8000; Fairmont.com/whistler;
doubles from $439 a night.

Pro: The only ski-in/ski-out resort on Blackcomb. Warm, country home décor makes the sprawling 550-room chateau feel surprisingly intimate—Martha would approve.

Con: Rooms on the third, fourth and fifth floors have not yet been refurbished; noise from the family-friendly pool area carries to the low-level slopeside rooms.

Perk: Even-numbered rooms have unobstructed mountain views.

Famous Guests: Justin Timberlake, Cameron Diaz, Hayden Christensen, Queen Latifah.

Bed Check: New pillow-top mattresses by Simmons, 220- to 300-thread-count sheets from Springs Canada and crisp duvets filled with two bed sheets to avoid that rumpled look.

Soaker Tub? Yes.

PAN PACIFIC WHISTLER MOUNTAINSIDE

4320 Sundial Cres.; 604-905-2999; Whistler.panpacific.com; doubles from $299.

Pro: Plum location at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb—second-floor pool deck is an ideal vantage point for people-watching—and, blessedly, no pets are allowed (Fifi and her Burberry bed will have to board elsewhere).

Con: Studio rooms top out at a tiny 411 sq. ft., and the décor is almost entirely beige.

Perk: Frette bathrobes.

Famous Guests: Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Pam Anderson, Paul Walker.

Bed Check: Simmons Beautyrest mattresses dressed in 220-thread-count, cotton-blend sheets, feather or polyester fill duvets with all-cotton duvet covers.

Soaker Tub? Yes.

WESTIN WHISTLER

4090 Whistler Way, 604-905-5000; Westinwhistler.com;
doubles from $319.

Pro:
Comprehensive wellness program includes twice-daily exercise classes and a state-of-the-art health club.

Con: Family-oriented programs and amenities mean sometimes-noisy kids abound.

Perk: WestinWorkout rooms—suites equipped with treadmills, weights, stability balls and exercise DVDs, for fully private workouts.

Famous Guests: Hugh Jackman, Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn.

Bed Check: Three bed sheets with thread counts from 180 to 250, a down blanket customized to the climate, a comforter and a snow white duvet.

Soaker Tub? Yes.

Editor’s note: Rates listed are for December, excluding the week of December 23, 2006, to January 1, 2007. Expect rates to rise come January.
