24 Days of B.C. Beer: Haulin’ Oats Oatmeal Stout by Main Street Brewing (No.14)

The brewery proves it's definitely not out of touch.

Welcome to 24 Days of Beer, in which we guide you through what might be a very dark month. Aren’t you glad we’re here to tell you what to drain your sorrows with?

This is the second Oatmeal Stout we’re rolling out on 24 Days of Beer and, much like Strathcona Brewing’s Four Year, this is another perfectly pleasant, very sippable Oatmeal Stout.

Main Street Brewing’s take might be a tad lighter than Strathcona’s, but it’s just as enjoyable. With coffee and chocolate flavours that are intriguing enough to keep you drinking but won’t get you bloated, it’s a very well crafted take on the oatmeal stout that can easily go wrong in less capable hands.

Honestly, when beers are this well crafted and seamless, it doesn’t give us much to talk about. So let’s talk about what is perhaps the best beer branding I’ve seen all year.

Sure, there are flashier bottles and cans out there that might stick out on the shelf more obviously than black on red. But if the incredibly punny title doesn’t get you (and it gets us, clearly), and the drawings of Daryl Hall and John Oates literally hauling oats doesn’t make you laugh, we can’t help you.

So kudos to Main Street—the brewery may not get the praise or notoriety of other Mount Pleasant haunts like Brassneck and 33 Acres, but it hardly ever lets a drinker down and it knows how to get creative.

Plus, it has the Miracle on Main Street charitable initiative going right now in which brewery-goers who drop off an unwrapped toy or gift card with a minimum value of $10 will receive a complimentary flight of its ‘core four’ beers.

Look at that, they’re making dreams come true. (So sorry, but it was just sitting there.)
