24 Days of B.C. Beer: Indulgeousness Imperial Stout by Superflux Beer Company (No.11)

The made-up title is somehow very apt.

Welcome to 24 Days of Beer, in which we guide you through what might be a very dark month. Aren’t you glad we’re here to tell you what to drain your sorrows with?

“We don’t often make stouts, so when we do we go way the fuck overboard.” That’s how East Van’s Superflux sums up their latest creation, an 11.5 percent imperial stout that absolutely kicks ass and completely lives up to its made-up name.

And of course, the brewery is right. Superflux makes very few false moves (I’ve never had anything from there I didn’t love, and I’ve had a lot), so when they say they’re going to go overboard (one expletive an article is plenty, sorry fellas), you believe them and you batter down the hatches.

I did, and this thing still (figuratively, of course) knocked down the door and burnt the place to the ground.

Apparently created to embody the flavour of a Nanaimo Bar, we must say it more or less succeeds in that mission (unlike a certain porter we know), but more importantly it absolutely bombards the drinker’s senses with chocolate (they used Portland’s Woodblock Chocolate) and coconut goodness, heavily wrapped in a walloping package of high alcohol percentage.

So yeah, don’t be fooled by the bright pinks, greens and oranges that highlight the can—this is an all-timer of a dessert beer that will likely cost you the same caloric intake as all the Christmas treats you have this year.

It’s worth it to say you tried what has to be now crowned as Vancouver’s Winter Beer Heavyweight. Of course, to get a crack at the king, you’ll have to head to the brewery’s tasting room—cans are completely and unsurprisingly sold out.
