2. The Cultch’s From East Van to Edinburgh

August 8 to 28

This across-the-pond theatre extravaganza was just announced last week: The Cultch is participating in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, showcasing five online performances of your favourite East Van shows. Don’t miss 1 Hour Photo, a play written and performed by Tetsuro Shigematsu that’s guaranteed to be the most compelling one-person play you’ve ever seen. Once you purchase tickets for a show, you can watch it at your leisure (so don’t worry about being on Edinburgh time).

Audiences can expect a variety of the city’s best musicians (including the Saxophilia Saxophone Quartet, Microcosmos String Quartet, Infamy Too! percussion and more). Bring your own blanket.

4. Pageant: A Musical Comedy Beauty Contest

August 11, 18 & 25

This musical turns pageant norms on their (sparkly) heads. All the contestants are played by male-identifying actors, and the “paternal”—and may we add, historically skeevy—host is played by Rachel Hayward, lately of Disney’s Turner and Hooch. Patriarchy, consider yourself judged.

Where: Online
Cost: $25 for adults
