1. "The Eraser" Photography Exhibition by Kriss Munsya

January 18 to February 26

Local photographer Kriss Munsya debuts his first ever exhibition this week, called The Eraser. His works tell a story of change and transformation (that “centres a Black man revisiting experiences that have been normalized in critical reflection of internalized supremacy,” according to the artist) in colourful, compelling portraits you’ll need to look twice (at least) at. 2. The Cultch’s The Cave

January 22 to 24

This virtual show (recorded live at the 2019 Luminato Festival) is set in—you guessed it—The Cave, a chaotic little space that is part forest dwelling, part nightclub. A cabaret begins as animals flee a forest fire and seek refuge. As the fire roars on, the animals ponder their impending doom. Seems like a good time to immerse yourself in someone else’s crumbling world, for a change.

3. The Vancouver Short Film Festival

January 22 to 24

What have local filmmakers been up to during the pandemic? For many, it’s been months of resourceful thinking and COVID-safe shooting, and you can check out the final result at the Vancouver Short Film Festival this week. We’re pumped to see Andy Hodgson’s El Color Negro— it’s a beautiful, think-y film exploring the meaning of Black (you can read more about it here).

4. Unscripted: Made in Canada (Online Tamale Cooking and Conversation)

January 24

Made in Canada is a musical journey that explores where our food comes from, and centres folks who come to Canada to work under the Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) program. This Sunday, creator Pedro Chamale is hosting a live-streamed “kitchen table talk” to promote the album—and to teach us how to make tamales.

5. Parker Art Salon’s Poetry Project

They say a picture’s worth a thousand words—but which ones, exactly? In this art and poetry exhibit, Beedie Luminaries students created poems inspired by art from ParkerArtSalon. They’re all available to buy, and proceeds benefit the BC Women’s Health Foundation.
