1. Talking Stick Festival: Summer Sojourn

Through July 1

The Talking Stick Festival’s summer lineup wraps up this week, but there are still plenty of online events to catch before closing on Thursday. Just added to the schedule is the book launch of Stand Like a Cedar by author Nicola I. Campbell, which includes a performance from Butterflies in Spirit (a dance group made of family members of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls), Tsatsu Stalqyu (a traditional Coast Salish performance group) and JB The First Lady (a hip hop and spoken word artist, beat-boxer, cultural dancer and youth educator). Tune in on July 1 at 7:00pm—or find all the events (including ones you can stream anytime) here.

2. The Da Vinci Experience

June 29

Leonardo Da Vinci himself would probably be pretty impressed by the technology at The Da Vinci Experience, Metro Vancouver’s (aka Tsawwassen’s) newest immersive, museum-slash-movie event. And he 100% would be down with some great merch at outlet prices— dude loved a bargain and was mad for Banana Republic. The 13,000 square foot space in Tsawwassen Mills Mall features projections, a virtual reality tour through Da Vinci’s life, and replicas of 10 of his inventions. Just don’t Mona ’bout the drive to Tsawwassen.

3. Juicy Gems Cabaret

July 2

Check out the city’s best plus-sized and fat professional cabaret artists at this showcase celebration presented by theatrecorps. From drag to spoken word to “deliciously goth burlesque,” they’ve got your Friday night covered—we recommended watching in a cool, dark room with an ice pack over your neck.

4. Carnaval Del Sol

July 1 to 24

The largest Latin American festival in the PNW is hosting a hybrid fest this year, with both online events and live outdoor performances. The 2021 Carnaval is focused on reconnecting through art and food—something we’re definitely hungry for.

5. Breakwater from Some Assembly Theatre and Rhytag

June 30, July 8 and July 11

This new theatre production was inspired by kid’s conversation around mental health. It’s a collaboration between diverse local youth and professional artists, and the result is a masked-up multi-media show premiering digitally this week. The story follows six youth battling the effects of isolation after a symbolic worldwide flood (a metaphor for, well, you know).
