1. DOXA Industry

DOXA Industry events are an arm of the DOXA Documentary Film Festival – but with a focus on educating future and current filmmakers. A series of workshops are available where you can build skills and connections while discussing the art of non-fiction storytelling.

2. Granville Island Brewery Birthday Party

May 14

Granville Island Brewery is turning 38! In honour of their b-day, the brewery is hosting a party with free food samples and (if you’re of drinking age) beer samples. Plus, live entertainment, games and food trucks are slated for the full day.

3. Festival of Israeli Culture – Outdoor Sunday

May 15

This one-day festival is set to celebrate Israeli culture through music, art, dance and of course, food. A big theme for the festival is the importance of diversity and inclusiveness and how they are both the building blocks of Israeli culture.

Cost: Events are free, but food donations to the Jewish Food Bank are encouraged

4. Dumb Instrument Dance – Rebel Grace

May 12 – May 14

The world premiere of Rebel Grace uses dance to explore gentle transactions as acts of resistance as well as empowerment and gratitude. Expect emotional scenes of movement set to live music.

5. Xicanx: Dreamers + Changemakers

May 12 – January 1

The artists featured in this exhibit are of Mexican American heritage and self-identify as Xicanx, which is a term that transcends borders and gender to encompass the Xicanx people’s multi-generational experiences of social difference. The Xicanx artists featured work across many different mediums but all combine visual art and activism in order to address personal, social and political issues.

Cost: $15; $13 for students and seniors; free for UBC faculty, staff and students
