5 Things to Do in Vancouver This Week (October 7-13)

Put a Cork in It

October 7

Check out the uncorking of Pop! Up Wine Bar’s pours at Livia Sweets. This pop-up bar happens on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, with today’s launch beginning the boozy tradition. Grab a glass (or four, you made it through Monday, after all) along with a bite from Livia Sweets’ antipasto menu—think breads, cookies, and “Grammy’s Cloud” biscuits.

When: Monday, October 7 6:00 p.m.
Where: Livia Sweets
Cost: $12 per glass

Water You Doing

October 8

Immerse yourself in National Geographic Live this Tuesday, where photojournalist and marine biologist Cristina Mittermeier is presenting Standing at Water’s Edge. Mittermeier’s documentation explores three disparate Indigenous communities in the Amazon, British Columbia, and Hawaii, and how each of these communities rely on and respect water. Each community has an understanding of taking only what they need—a concept that most of us could learn a lot from.

When: Tuesday, October 8 7:00 p.m.
Where: Orpheum Theatre
Cost: From $45

Canines in Colour

October 10

Even the most advanced camera technology likely can’t capture how adorable your German shepherd or hairless chihuahua is (all dogs are beautiful)! But perhaps a painting can? Artist or amateur, you’ll come out of Cork It Winemaking’s Paint Your Pet Night with a great likeness of your animal—participants send in a hi-res image of their pet to be sketched beforehand, so all you have to do is paint. Plus, the more wine you drink, the better your painting looks.

When: Thursday, October 10 7:00 p.m.
Where: Cork It Wine Making
Cost: $47

Stage Sharing

October 10 – November 3

Don’t miss Cost of Living, a 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning play exploring physical ability and relationships. The show is a drama but has its share of lighter moments. It follows two relationships—one between a wealthy student and young woman in need, and another between a divorced man and his ex-wife. The show explores what it means to give care, regardless of dis/ability.

When: Thursday, October 10 – Sunday, November 3
Where: Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre
Cost: From $29

Tuck In

October 13 & 14

The Sandbar is trading in its generally seafood-focused menu for classic Thanksgiving offerings this weekend, including winter vegetables, house-made cranberry sauce, and oven-roasted turkey (the fish of the land, some might say).  Each course has optional wine pairings from Cedar Creek and Quails Gate, and dessert is a traditional pumpkin pie with vanilla whipped cream (the sea foam of the land)?

When: Sunday, October 13 and Monday, October 14
Where: The Sandbar
Cost: $145
