1. Celebrate Negroni Week
September 13 to 19
18 Vancouver restaurants are celebrating the Negroni this week by serving up the apéritif for a cause. There's a full list of participating restaurants here, including the Chickadee Room's Classic Negroni (pictured above)— $1 from each one sold will be donated to the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre.
2. Do an Escape Room in Your Own House
September 16 to 26
This apocalypse-themed at-home escape room has got to be one of the most unique theatrical endeavours to come out of the pandemic. Here's how Revelations works: you buy a ticket for your household, and someone from Upintheair Theatre drops off a box at your house. A walkie talkie is included. Then, you open the box and the game begins—the whole time, you're in contact with an "Apocalypse Consultant" via walkie talkie. Later in the evening, there's an in-person interactive performance at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. Folks in East Van, New West and Burnaby are all within the delivery zone—so if you're an eastsider up to the challenge, grab a ticket for the end of the world.
3. Eat at Dream Cuisine's Street Food Pop-Up
Local nonprofit Flavours of Hope has been helping newcomer refugee women get their start in Vancouver's culinary industry through their pilot program, called Dream Cuisines. This weekend street food celebration includes the work of Angeles Canedo of Mis Cazuelas Mexican Food, Huda Abd Elhamid of Super Dishes (pictured above) and Angelica Davalos Ramirez of Tinkerbake. Think pastries, quesadillas, ceviche, hawawshi—hungry yet?
4. Take a Flower Bouquet Workshop (and Drink Wine)
Wind down for the week at this dried floral workshop hosted by local florist Dried by Design. Participants will be guided through all the steps to creating a gorgeous bouquet that lasts a lot longer than traditional fresh flowers, and the winery venue isn't for nothing—a ticket also gets you two glasses of Lulu Island's Pinot Gris, Merlot, or Blueberry Fruit Wine.
5. Monstercat Compound
This annual (save for last year) outdoor block party is an electronic music lover’s paradise, with live tunes, art and gaming. Entry is free, but for $25 you can treat yourself to a private bar and viewing area. The lineup includes The Funk Hunters, Tony Romera, Sabai, OBLYVN and more.
