Don’t Panic but Hamilton is Coming to Vancouver

I’m ecstatic. I’m overjoyed. I’m elated. I’m going to be very broke by the end of 2021. Why? Because Broadway Across Canada has announced their upcoming Vancouver season and it is as spectacular as it is diverse.

The grande finale of the season and its crown jewel is Hamilton. That’s right — everyone’s favourite founding father without a father is coming to Vancouver Summer 2021. If you haven’t been in the room where it happens the last five years, Hamilton tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton and the birth of the United States. What makes it so unique is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop, jazz, R&B, Broadway-fusion score. Learning history has never been so fun. Or so catchy.

The other four shows are almost as exciting, with a mix of new hits and beloved classics.

“With a record number of subscribers last season, we remain so appreciative of the support and excitement surrounding our 2019-2020 season featuring Dear Evan Hansen,” said Shana Levin, Vice President of Broadway Across Canada. “It’s a true privilege to share in the Broadway experience with our loyal patrons year after year at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, our home in Vancouver.”

Kicking the season off is Broadway-veteran Chicago, which holds the title of longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Join the six merry murderesses in September 2020 for a tale of intrigue, deadly romance, limelight and all that jazz. If the back-to-back killer show tunes aren’t enough for you, the Fosse dancing is also incredible.

Next up is musical phenomenon Jesus Christ Superstar. Now in its 50th year, the controversial rock opera is a loose retelling of the Gospel’s account of the last week of Jesus’ life. Trust me—you’ll be singing “Gethsemene” for weeks.

I’ll stand by this until the day I day: Anastasia is one of the most underrated animated princesses of all time (I know she’s not Disneym but she’s got a killer song, a somewhat nuanced romance and enough sass to put Ursula to shame). A new and improved Anastasia (there’s a new score!) will be taking the Queen Elizabeth stage next January. Expect romance and adventure in this kid-friendly journey to the past.

March will bring award-winning show Come From Away, the true story of 7,000 passengers stranded in a small town in Newfoundland following the 9/11 attacks. This new Canadian musical reaffirms the true depths of human compassion in the face of tragedy.

If ever there were a season to invest in Broadway Across Canada’s Season Package (which starts at $215 and gets you tickets to Hamilton, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chicago and Anastasia), this is it. Current subscribers can purchase tickets starting January 20 and new subscribers can buy starting January 23. All shows will take place at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. It’s going to be a music and dance packed year ahead, folks.
