5 Things to Do in Vancouver This Week (September 30 to October 6)

Whine and Dine

October 2

Sure, October means less sunlight, more rain, and a distressing retail onslaught of Christmas decorations—but it’s also one of the best times of year for your taste buds. Treat yourself to elegant autumn flavours at Defiantly Different: Wildebeest x The Prisoner Wine Co., where Chef Ian McHale is whipping up a hearty five-course dinner including smoked magret duck, sweetcorn agnolotti, and Subtilia Ranch wagyu tartare. Each dish will be paired with one of The Prisoner Wine Co.’s red blends, so you can reminisce about summer days with a little colour in your cheeks.

When: Wednesday, October 2 6:00 p.m.
Where: Wildebeest
Cost: $145

On the Fly

October 3

Get your gasping muscles ready for Cirque Du Soleil’s LUZIA. This incredible acrobatic show captures an imagined Mexico, filled with sights and sounds both traditional and fantastical. The photo above reveals a tribute to the monarch butterfly, which flies from Canada to Mexico annually (and boy, are their arms tired).

When: Thursday, October 3 – Sunday, December 29
Where: Concord Pacific Place
Cost: From $54
More Info: cirquedusoleil.com

Drink Up

October 4-11

Head up north for the third annual Vancouver’s North Shore Craft Beer Week, where you can sample all the breweries worth the bridge traffic. Events include Beere Brewing’s second birthday party, an open mic night at Black Kettle Brewing, and Taco Tuesday at Bridge brewing. As far as we’re concerned, it’s the only time you should be able to wear your “Wish You Were Beer” shirt in public.

When: Friday, October 4 – Friday, October 11
Where: Multiple venues
Cost: Varies
More Info: vancouversnorthshore.com/craftbeerweek

Local Lights

October 5

Celebrate contemporary and classical Indian culture at Diwali Downtown, Metro Vancouver’s central Diwali event. Diwali is the grandest bash of all Indian holidays, and celebrates the triumph of good over evil with a big and bright celebration (diwali means “row of lighted lamps”). This year’s Diwali Downtown features music and dance performances and an Indian style bazaar with local crafts and sweets—it’s a joyous, high-energy event worth the commute to Surrey.

When: Saturday, October 5 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Where: Surrey City Hall
Cost: By donation
More Info: diwalifest.ca
