Cocktails are like Christmas Carols —the classics are always the best, but once in a blue moon a newcomer comes along that manages to surprise you. Like Low's amazing Just Like Christmas—it fits rather perfectly into the gap left by the never-to-be-mentioned-again Baby, it's Cold Outside. With cocktails, you got to have some moxie to think about replacing The Blue Blazer, the Tom and Jerry or the Hot Toddy in the holiday rotation. Yet this topical and somewhat odd offering might just be able to do it with it's blend of the familiar and the kooky. London's Sipsmith gin has become the leading advocate for hot gin cocktails and while some are a bit out there—subbing gin into hot mulled wine?—this one is just so crazy it works. The key is the addition of the tea, which brings down proof and the pow on this, so having a few doesn't mean travelling home in a wheelbarrow belting out Hark, The Herald Angels Sing.
25ml London Dry Gin (Sipsmith would prefer if you use theirs)
25ml sweet vermouth
Red berry tea
Dehydrated orange or fresh orange slice, to garnish
Pour all ingredients into a mug and stir. Top with hot red berry tea and garnish with a dehydrated orange or a fresh orange slice.
