9 New Vancouver Restaurants to Try in 2022

New spots for hot dogs, plant-based eats, pho, and breakfast favourites.

Finding unique, tasty food is my forever New Year’s resolution. Here are 9 new Vancouver restaurants ranging from upscale dining to a spot on The Drive with killer nachos. Whether you’re looking for something fast and delicious (hello #7 with Jamaican patties) or a shared plate situation (looking at you #1 and #5),  you’re bound to find something to start the year off right.

1. District Eleven

Now Open

This Main Street spot serves up modern takes on Vietnamese classics. Think innovative dishes like umami bombs (marinated cherry tomatoes with scallion, onion and shiso) or elevated classics like their take on bo bun hue (hot tip: add a sous-vide egg to make it even tastier).

2. Fable Diner & Bar

Opening Soon

Vancouver’s much loved Fable Diner is opening a new location in the historic Kingston Hotel. Expect elevated comfort food, including fan favourites like their roast duck pancakes as well as pizzas (exclusive to this location), burgers and creative boozy drinks. As always, they offer vegan and vegetarian options as well as spirit-free drinks like their house-made sodas.

3. Hero’s Welcome

Now Open

Ushering what was once a beloved Army, Navy and Air Force veterans community club into a new era, Hero’s Welcome looks to preserve the spirit of the original space while reimagining it to include a selection of Hero’s hero sandwiches (the veggie features coconut bacon!) as well as classic bar snacks and a range of BC draught and craft beer.

4. The Modern Pantry

Now Open

The Modern Pantry’s new location in West Vancouver crafts flavourful treats and baked goods as well as unique savory sandwiches and classic coffee beverages with house-made syrups. Per their name, they also sell pantry staples like their famed granola and house-made tomato jam.

5. Nightshade

Now Open

Nightshade is bringing elevated plant-based eats to Yaletown. Think plant-based cheese plates, pastas and sushi, like their Nightshade Roll (pictured above) that features Japanese eggplant with avocado, sesame and caramelized soy glaze in place of unagi sauce.

6. The Drive Canteen

Now Open

From the team behind DL Chicken in partnership with urban streetwear entrepreneaur Zach Wilcox, The Canteen lays down local treats (think DL Chicken spicy dill pickles and Chaotic Good cookies) as well as creative takes on hot dogs and nachos. In a sense, this is your local convenience store, but they also have art, clothing and music to go along with some incredible bites.

7. Rise Up Marketplace

Strathcona’s Rise Up Marketplace offers takeout coffee and house-made sandwiches as well as local favourites like Cartem’s donuts, Elbo Jamaican patties, Cadeaux Bakery baked goods alongside pantry items (think Mumgry Nut Butter).

8. Elephant Restaurant

Now Open

Elephant is an 18-seat restaurant that offers a five-course omakase style experience with a menu that changes daily to reflect seasonality. Think elevated, produce forward dishes like chicories with preserved crab roe, cumin and fermented chili.
