Us and Vancouver’s music scene!

3. Experience Kore-eda’s Emotional Masterpiece, Monster, at the VIFF Centre

January 7

Not even a week into 2024 and critics are already hailing the Japanese drama from director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters) as one of the standout films of the year. If that didn’t pique your interest, it includes an introspective score by the late great Ryuichi Sakamoto so you know it’s bound to make you think or cry (or both!) Here’s the trailer (if you’re one of those people.)

When: January 7
Where: VIFF Centre
Cost: $15

4. Witness a Flexible Return Policy in Nellie Gossen’s Performance Installation Returns

January 7- February 3

It’s dance performance meets retail therapy (kind of?). Nellie Gossen’s Returns is a transformative art experiment, reshaping garments creatively over 30 days into new forms, danced and reimagined, then meticulously restored to their original state for a full refund—and Aritzia won’t take back my jeans even though I “don’t have a receipt and have clearly wore them as I am wearing them right now!”

When: January 7
Where: The Dance Centre
Cost: Free
