Silent Discos and Daft Punk Covers: 4 Very Fun Excuses to Go Dancing This Summer

Get your groove on at these upcoming Vancouver events.

At Vanmag, we’re firm believers that “no fun city” can actually be so fun city if you know where to look. Vancouverites are notoriously known for wanting to move their bodies—hiking, biking, swimming, anyone?! Crowds have even showed out in hordes to impromptu Skytrain dance parties and sunset beach pop-ups led by Vancouver DJ Felix Cartal. This month proves to have a worthy bevy of body-movin’ events you may want to shake it to.

Silent Disco Rooftop Party At The Fairmont Waterfront
Saturday, August 23

A hotel rooftop? A poolside terrace? A dedicated DJ? These things have all the trappings of a successful rave—and yet this one will be totally silent, to the outside world that is. The Fairmont Waterfront will be kicking off its first-ever silent disco on its epic rooftop garden, where “partiers” can strap on a wireless headset and choose one of three rhythms across channels curated and mixed by local DJ Remsta. While the event is open to movers-and-shakers over the age of 12, there will also be a handcrafted cocktail or spirit-free drink included in the ticket price.

“This silent disco is a bold new way we’re reimagining that connection,” said Randall Williams, general manager of Fairmont Waterfront. “It’s a celebration of the best of Vancouver’s coastal energy, music scene and community spirit.”

Brazilian Day Vancouver
August 29 and 30

Though there are a few Latin American dance nights happening in Vancouver clubs, we’re markedly missing the kind of heat that, say, Carnaval brings Brazil. That’s all about to change with the inaugural Brazilian Day Vancouver (though, technically, it’s a weekend), a new festival coming to the Plaza of Nations with a heavy emphasis on dance. The two-day fete will feature iconic Brazilian axé band É O Tchan, plus more live bands and DJs and a mini Carnaval street party, aiming to showcase the joy of Brazil’s famous carnival.

One More Time: A Tribute To Daft Punk
Friday, August 15

Whether you wiggled your little body to “Around the World” infront of the TV screen when it came up on the MuchMusic back in the late ’90s (just me?) or were vibing to “I Feel It Comin’” in the club about 10 years back, it stands to say that the music of Daft Punk is universally appealing across generations. Grab your mom or your besties (or both) and head over to The Pearl to catch Daft Punk tribute duo One More Time as they churn out the mysterious band’s hits.

Light Up Chinatown!: After Glow
Saturday, August 16

The annual Light Up Chinatown! Festival doles out a weekend of things to see, eat and do in Chinatown—but for the first time this year, the “do” includes an “after glow” of sorts. On Saturday evening, Fara and Lean The Band will hit the main stage followed by a “happy hour” and dance party in the streets by DJ May Q Move. The official after party will then move to Fortune Sound Club.
