5 Things to Do in Vancouver This Week (November 4-10)

Go Green

November 5-10

American Idiot may have first opened on Broadway in 2010 (and be based on the rock album from 2004), but we, as a society, have grown no less angsty. Green Day’s beloved jukebox musical stomps in to North Vancouver this week, featuring not-so-guilty pleasures like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and “21 Guns.” The show tells the story of three buddies searching for meaning in a Trumpian suburbia—if that’s not a good enough reason to lock yourself in your room, blast punk rock and ruin all your pillows with black eyeliner, what is?

When: Tuesday, November 5 – Sunday, November 10 8:00 p.m.
Where: Centennial Theatre
Cost: From $25
More Info: urp.ca

Listen Up

November 7-10

Treat your ears (and eyes, for a change) to true crime, history, and comedy galore at the second annual Vancouver Podcast Festival. Audiences can meet the voices behind Dirty John, Red Man Laughing, Dark Poutine, and more at this weekend fest. Events vary in price, but lots are free—this panel on women and non-binary people in podcasting, for example.

When: Thursday, November 7 – Sunday, November 10
Where: Multiple Venues
Cost: Ranges from pay what you can to $25

Tap That Taco

November 8 & 9

As the evenings get darker, so does the beer, apparently. Strathcona Brewing and Tacofino are releasing a new collaboration this week: a Dark Lager that sounds like a good antidote for a 4 p.m. sunset. The Mexican-style lager has a base of Malted Maris Otter and a mellow citrus flavour. It’ll be launched at Strathcona Brewing on Friday and at the Gastown Tacofino on Saturday (that’s double the bubbles).

When: Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9
Where: Strathcona Brewing on Friday and Tacofino Gastown Taco Bar on Saturday

Glowing Hearts

Through November 10

The Heart of the City Festival celebrates the development of artists, cultural traditions, history, activism, and great stories in the DTES. The festival continues this week with a jam-packed schedule of performances, forums, exhibits and more. Check out the documentary V6A screening at the Carnegie Theatre this Saturday—the film celebrates resilience against human-made odds. Post-movie, there’s an activist-led discussion on housing justice including City Councilor Jean Swanson.

When: Now – Sunday, November 10
Where: Various venues
Cost: Varies; many events are free or pay what you can

School’s Out

November 10

Beloved and lovingly behated RuPaul’s Drag Race star Willam struts into the city this weekend to teach Sunday School. Sure, it might be a little different than traditional Sunday teachings, but also a heck of a lot more fun. If her past performances in Vancouver are any indication, she’ll have audiences cringe-laughing all night long.

When: Sunday, November 10 8:00 p.m.
Where: London Pub
Cost: From $30
More Info: eventbrite.ca
