Is There a Distinctly “Vancouver” Watch?
With one very notable exception, the Vancouver Whitecaps have never really had a name-brand player take the city by storm.
Now, Inbeom Hwang is still a ways away from doing that, but he’s certainly captivated the team’s fans in a way not seen since Alfonso Davies took his talents to Munich.
The South Korean midfielder played his first season with the team last year and was named the club’s most promising player. But he quickly became known off the field as well, becoming something of an icon in the eyes of Vancouver’s South Korean community.
Obviously, the Whitecaps’ season is in limbo right now, but things were already looking better than last year with Vancouver going 1-1 to start the season and beating the always strong L.A. Galaxy.
While the Whitecaps have seen a heavy amount of turnover in recent years, Hwang is under club control for this season and the following two. He’s also reportedly “fallen in love” with the city.
You probably won’t be able to see Hwang take the field for awhile, unfortunately. But you can watch an adorable video of him scoring on what appears to be a mini teepee. There’s also a winning cameo by what’s ostensibly Hwang’s dog. If it doesn’t put a smile on your face, I’m not sure what to tell you.
