Geoffrey Farmer at the Vancouver Art Gallery

The Vancouverite brings 15 years of work to the VAG.

At 47, Geoffrey Farmer has reached that heart-stopping moment of freefall in the artist’s trajectory: the midcareer survey show. The Vancouver-based artist mixes media, genres, and materials to construct tiny forest installations of magazine clippings and other ephemera, creating oddly fragile, elusive spaces that set the creator’s life into the broadest of contexts. Fifteen years’ worth form the heart of the exhibit How Do I Fit This Ghost in My Mouth?Gallery curator Daina Augaitis explains Farmer’s enigmatic title thusly: in addition to being a survey of past work, some pieces “will also incorporate a reconstruction by the artist of his own past, the institution’s history, and the former function of the gallery as a courthouse. Through this evocative title, he is perhaps asking, How do we embody knowledge? How do we embody the past?”How Do I Fit This Ghost in My Mouth?May 30 – Sept. 7Vancouver Art Gallery (750 Hornby St.)Vanartgallery.bc.ca
