Indigo Will Re-Open on Robson Street This Fall

The beloved bookstore finally has a new place to call home.

When the original multi-level flagship Chapters/Indigo store on the corner of Robson and Howe closed down and was replaced by a Sports Check we were gutted (and resented exercise more than ever)—Vancouver had lost yet another bookstore as quirky independent shops and franchised giants alike were closing down.Though years have passed, we’re still not ready to trade rows of bookshelves for Amazon Prime. And it seems, neither is Indigo. After long having searched for another piece of prime real estate downtown, Indigo announced this week that they’re finally able to make a comeback. Set to open this fall, the 29,000-square-foot store complete with café and community space (will they be bringing back those comfy leather armchairs?) is being heralded as the “world’s first cultural department store.”There will never be a substitute for the character of small, second-hand bookstores, but there’s something to be said about browsing Indigo’s cute collection of homewares and accessories (like those incredibly soft fur throws we all seem to have) and we’re happy to once again peruse the stacks—we hope it lasts this time.The only catch? The new location will take the place of another Robson-street staple, Forever 21. Broke students and partying 30-somethings will no doubt be lamenting its loss but, personally, we can’t wait to see the new and improved bookstore take its place (the tiny Indigo Spirit shop on the corner of Granville and Robson just hasn’t been cutting it).
