24 Days of B.C. Beer: 7109 Whiskey Barrel Aged Stout by Brewhall and Egan’s Whiskey (No.17)

Get ready to be impressed. And completely knocked over.

Welcome to 24 Days of Beer, in which we guide you through what might be a very dark month. Aren’t you glad we’re here to tell you what to drain your sorrows with?

Brewhall sometimes gets a bad rap from some of the city’s beer snobs. It’s not hard to see why. For one, it often (at least when things are normal) feels more like a club than a brewery. And its proclivity toward sour beers can turn people off.

But I’ve had more than a few Brewhall beers that are thoughtfully made and executed. And its beer list is constantly impressive.

Even so, I was surprised how innovative the brewery got with its latest, the 7109 Whiskey Barrel Aged Stout that was made in barrels from Tullamore, Ireland-based Egan’s.

I’m not a huge fan of whiskey/beer collabs, I much prefer them to be two separate things. But even still, I can appreciate how much this absolute monster of a nine percent beer just completely kicks ass. With hints of vanilla and oak, it brings enough character to fill out a Jane Austen novel.

It is, and I can’t say this sternly enough, to be enjoyed in moderation. One glass. Maybe two. You’ll want to stop there.

Am I saying this because I drank an entire bottle over a Zoom Christmas party and felt horrendous the next day? Can’t say. But take your shot, beer snobs. Or better yet, the entire bottle.
