Angus An’s Maenam (Gold) is in a class of its own. Deeply rich and layered curries and soups pair perfectly with salads full of citrus, fresh herbs, and lemongrass. “The crispy oysters with nam jim sauce alone are worth a trip,” said one judge. “This is Thai food in which carefully sourced ingredients are married in fresh and unexpected ways. Maenam is elevating Thai food in much the same way that Vij’s made us rethink our notions of Indian cuisine.” Silver goes to Sawasdee Thai (which, one judge pointed out, also packs up the city’s best takeout Thai). And Bronze goes to the downtown location of the family-run Salathai. Honourable Mentions this year go to Simply Thai and Tang Thai.
