Judges glowed about Top Shanghai Cuisine (Gold). “It used to feel like sharp elbows were needed to get a table,” said one, “but this year they’re far better managed, very convivial.” Note: the pan-fried buns are the best in town. Gudrun (Silver) is a little holdout of urbanity (and rich cuisine) in sleepy Steveston. The patio-with its giant communal table under a grandfatherly oak-may host the best summertime glass of wine in Metro Vancouver. And oh, judges swear by the beef bourguignon. Hoi Tong Seafood (Bronze) offers “crazy elegant” Chinese seafood. “You’ll meet eccentric locals here,” said one judge, “and a smart crowd that really knows how to order.”
