Best Steakhouse 2014

GOLD: HY’S ENCORE

Silver: Gotham Steakhouse | Bronze: The Roof at Black & Blue | Honourable Mention: Hamilton Street Grill, The Keg

A mesquite-lump charcoal grill keeps Hy’s Encore (Gold)-a flaming temple to carnivores-atop the list. The room is timeless, nostalgia offered without a soupçon of irony, but judges welcomed one recent innovation: the switch to Prime grade wet-aged Canadian beef. Dark, decadent, always delicious Gotham (Silver) is still worth the splurge for one glorious reason: that mammoth, juicy porterhouse sliced and served family-style. The Roof at Black & Blue (Bronze) won plaudits for the food, courtesy of a state-of-the-art Josper charcoal broiler, and décor as well. Zebra pillows, bronzed bull heads, and palm trees make the enclosed solarium feel like an haute patio party in a Coal Harbour penthouse, with requisite healthful sides like crispy kale and garlic-mashed quinoa salad for balance.
