Tacofino Commissary, the first bricks-and-mortar progeny of the much-loved food truck, claimed Gold from our judges for offering “authentic flavours without being held back by tradition.” This means tacos filled with skirt steak and jalapeño, but also chicken karaage and Brussels sprout kimchee; or a take on poutine that teams tater tots with “chorizo verde” and salsa fresca. La Taqueria (Silver), which recently expanded to a third location in North Vancouver, continues to be a model of simplicity: a tight selection of meat and vegetable tacos, each a perfect balance of flavours. (Carnivores would be remiss in overlooking the vegan tinga de hongos, with sautéd mushrooms and chipotle.) Re-Up BBQ, at New Westminster’s River Market, loads up its customers with heaps of southern-inspired proteins: pulled pork, brisket, and fried chicken come on a bun or as a platter. Don’t forget the heavenly buttermilk biscuits. Honourable Mentions: El Camino’s, Los Cuervos Taqueria & Cantina
