Calling all foodies: These are the best Latin American restaurants in Vancouver.
GOLD: La Taqueria, Various locations
SILVER: Chancho Tortilleria, 560 Davie Street
BRONZE: Chupito, 322 W Hastings Street
HONOURABLE MENTIONS: Alimentaria
It’s no secret that Latin food in Vancouver has seen a boom over the past few years. From moody eateries featuring fresh aguachile to late-night haunts with cheesy birria tacos, what was once a lean category has become a staple in the Vancouver culinary scene. That means choosing our winners was no easy feat for this years’ judges—but La Taqueria nabs the gold, thanks to its casual-yet-hip fare served in handheld form. With straight-out-of-Mexico-City vibes, tortillas are made in-house and fillings range from perfectly charred alpastor to huitlacoche mushroomstew.
Silver goes to Chancho Tortilleria with its pared-down menu that is as bona fide as they come: heirloom-corn tortillas served with five options of authentic Mexican fillings (three pork, two veggie) all made with local ingredients.
La Taqueria’s little sister, Chupito, snags bronze with its excellent alley-side patio, expansive and creative cocktail program and coastal Mexican eats. Honourable mention goes to Alimentaria thanks to its traditional-yet-elevated Mexican fare.
