The top picks from one of New York's coolest fashion lines.
Known for artful custom textiles, graceful modern silhouettes, and covetable footwear, New York-based designer Rachel Comey has reinvented the “cool girl” uniform. With a background in sculpture and costume design, Comey’s effortlessly cool designs have earned her a following among the creative class—individuals who don’t follow labels and trends but choose instead to craft their style through a combination of new pieces and vintage favourites. Those who subscribe to the cult of Comey include Cindy Sherman, Parker Posey, Michelle Williams and Maggie Gyllenhaal (to name a few). Tonight, Vancouverites will get the chance to experience Comey’s covetable designs first-hand: One of a Few in Gastown will be hosting an exclusive trunk show featuring pieces from Comey’s fall line (Rachel Comey’s Sales Director, Taisa Skulsky, will also be on hand at the event). We recruited One of a Few owner Michelle Rizzardo to share her top five Rachel Comey pieces for Vancouver fashionistas.1. The Lilt Coat features “hand” embroidery on each pocket, adding a playful touch to the coat’s clean lines. The boxy shape and cropped length are modern and relaxed. Paired with a cream skirt, black cropped pants or a long dress, this navy wool jacket is versatile while still making a statement.2. The Slim Legion Pant is slightly cropped with a strait leg and comes in a variety of colours. The pant is inspired by Rachel’s childhood in the seventies, when her mother would gradually let the hem out of her jeans as she grew. The raw seam on the bottom creates a look that is edgy and casual. Currently we have the dirty white denim which pairs beautifully with the navy Lilt coat.3. The Fringe Collection that Rachel put out this fall has been very well received. In particular the cropped fringe vest is my favourite. The fringe hangs beautifully and looks full without broadening shoulders. This unique piece is something we all need when sprucing up a black bottom!4. The Vala shoe and 5. The Leeds shoe. Rachel’s shoes have come so far in the nine years we have carried her. Each season her expansive collection blows my mind; in particular this season are the fur-embellished Vala heels. Shoes are key for me as they are such an easy way to get playful and add interest to an outfit. The Leeds, with a blocked heel and soft nude patent leather, is an easy shoe that will work all through the winter (and into the spring months as well). Event open to the public, October 22, 6-9pm One of a Few, 354 Water Street, 604-605-0685
