Fluevog’s Collab with Anna Sui Is a ’90s Dream

The re-release of the butterfly appliqué adorned shoes feel both nostalgic and current.

Longtime friends John Fluevog and Anna Sui are both iconic designers in their own right. Fluevog for his uniquely funky shoes and accessories, Sui for her effortlessly glam runway-worthy clothing. It only makes sense, then, that two designers who have been at the height of fashion influence for decades would share so much history. “We get each other’s vibe,” Fluevog says with a smile.

When you’re high-level designers like them, getting each other’s vibe is more than just meeting for dinner when you happen to be in town. This year Fluevog and Sui reached back into their archives in order to re-release their 1993 collab that features a butterfly appliqué, making it feel both retro and utterly now.

“We found the original butterfly, which we reproduced,” says Sui. “And John refined the actual shoe we did in the 90s. I think he made it even better.”

We’re inclined to agree. The design, which is available both as a lace up knee-high boot (called “Crysallis,” $999) and as Mary Janes (called “Pirouette,” $479), has been updated to reflect modern styling, while still remaining distinctly Fluevog in shape.

“Everyone’s wearing Mary Janes,” Fluevog says. And he’s right, my 15-year-old self would be shocked that I’m wearing them again, but flats are the moment again. Neither Fluevog nor Sui are ones to chase trends, instead they’re solidifying it as one that’s here to stay.
