Inside a Modern Family Reno in Dunbar

All we’ve ever wanted was to snoop around other people’s houses. Now, that dream is a reality with some help from our friends over at Western Living. In the second of our five-part series, a look inside a gorgeous modern home in Vancouver’s Dunbar neighbourhood, and some design tips to boot.When the Nelson family moved into their Arts and Crafts-style house, they were a family of three. Eight years later, they became a party of five. Outgrowing the space that no longer suited their needs, they called in interior designer Kelly Deck to reimagine their dream home. “It already had great bones and was in the neighbourhood they loved,” says Deck. “We just had to make it more modern and polished.”

 1. Choose a colour palette that suits your lifestyle. Interior designer Kelly Deck transformed a predominantly white formal dining room into a mixed palette of soft greys to make it more kid-friendly, yet still elegant enough for entertaining.2. Brighten with lighter furnishings. If your space suffers from a lack of natural light, dark floors and furnishings are going to further emphasize this problem. Here Deck drastically brightened the space by injecting the kitchen with ample whites and light greys, in addition to taking the mahogany floors up several shades to a medium grey brown.3. Add a touch of glamour. Even though this is a family home, the designer was tasked with creating a wow factor in every room—for the master ensuite, tired and dated tile was replaced with a herringbone pattern of Bianco Carrera marble, which made a world of difference.4. Liberate a crowded living room with leaner furniture. The homeowners traded in chunkier pieces for furniture perched on slim legs—like the Knoll womb chair, Mobital Elysee coffee table and sleek L-shaped sofa—to allow for visual flow.5. Mix rich textures for a luxurious feel.
