Must-Try Vancouver Dish: The French Toast at Tutto

Tutto is now serving brunch—and the french toast might just be the best part.

Downtown’s Tutto restaurant is known for its Italian cuisine—think mountains of lobster tagliatelle and crisp pizza topped with prosciutto, fior di latte and truffle honey—but they recently launched a new brunch menu, and let’s just say Italian-inspired breakfast fare is just what la nonna ordered.

The overall brunch experience was top notch—from the Italian take on a morning cocktail (featuring Campari as well as fresh squeezed OJ) to the savoury porchetta eggs benedict—but this food writer was blown away by the focaccia French toast.

To put it bluntly, I rarely order a sweet brunch item. In fact, I rarely order desserts at restaurants in general. I’m a savoury gal through and through. However, my trip to Tutto may have just changed that—and I’m not mad about it.

Tutto’s iteration of French toast ain’t your average bread-soaked-in-egg. When it arrives the focaccia is practically jiggling. If you’re familiar with bread pudding, then you know the texture I’m talking about. It’s custardy, it’s creamy and somehow it’s lighter than the sum of its parts.

The French toast isn’t too sweet either, it’s balanced by cloud-like dollops of lemon ricotta and a sweet-tart strawberry compote.

Every dish we tried from Tutto’s new brunch menu was delicious in its own right (highly recommend the lavender mimosa), but the French toast was the one-two punch that’ll keep me coming back.
