January is typically the slowest time for restaurants, and with good reason: usually happy-to-eat-out customers are broke and/or on some sort of dry January or attempted clean-eating streak after 31 consecutive days of downing rum-and-eggnogs for breakfast, lunch and dessert. But a group of local chefs is making a strong case for loosening your purse strings a little—and leaving the comfort of your thermostat-equipped home—on January 14 with Fare: For the Human Right to Health Food, a six-course collab dinner prepared by eight of Vancouver’s leading chefs at Torafuku, proceeds from which will benefit the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House. The event will see Torafuku’s Sandy Chen and Clement Chan joined by fellow chefs Warren Chow (Juniper Kitchen and Bar), Jason Harris (Colette Grand Café), Will Lew (Notch 8 Restaurant and Bar at Hotel Vancouver), Colin Staus (Campagnolo), Alessandro Vianello and Douglas Chang (Ai and Om Knives), who, together, will cook up plates like maple-soy smoked scallops, potato tortellini, butter-poached sole and a chocolate tart with orange-pekoe ice cream to form a seasonally inspired feast that will warm the hearts of attendees and beneficiaries alike.Tickets to the dinner are $150 each, 100 percent of which will go directly to the DTES Neighbourhood House and its efforts in providing vulnerable DTES residents with quality, healthy foods. You can even nab a tax receipt for your efforts—a good start to the year if one of your resolutions for 2019 involves paying it forward or giving back to the community. When: January 14, 2019; doors at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m.Where: Torafuku, 958 Main St.Cost: $150 per person; tickets are available onlineMore info: bit.ly/FARE_DINNER
