If every Vancouver neighbourhood’s food scene was an NHL team (note to self: file away idea for future article), Strathcona would be a team with a bevy of highly touted prospects, brimming with excitement and ready to explode. (Sorta like the Canucks a couple years ago, before cap management miscues permeated mediocrity. Yes, I went to the game last night, why do you ask?)
Anyway, Strathcona’s collection of restaurants is undeniably one of the best in the city these days, and that’s rightly being highlighted with Dine Strathcona. Started earlier this week (and running until November 30), the initiative brings together 19 of Strathcona’s best eateries and drinkeries (deciding that’s a word) to raise money for the HAVE Culinary Training Society.
Each restaurant has selected a specific dish, of which $5 from every purchase goes to HAVE, a registered charity and non-profit culinary training society that offers an eight-week culinary training program for people that face barriers to employment, particularly residents of the Downtown Eastside and Strathcona.
The all-star lineup is a who’s who of culinary innovators in the city today. Some of our must-tries include: fried cauliflower and chickpeas ($17) from Ask For Luigi; the chicken parm sandwich ($12.50) from Container Brewing/Burdy; chicken of the sea ($20) from the Mackenzie Room; and the mushroom bowl ($12.50) from the Garden Strathcona, among many others.
